May 15-17, 2015 is the weekend that everyone near and far are looking forward to this year. The Stonycreek Rendezvous is just around the corner and is bigger and better than ever. I have rounded up some new vendors, new bands and some great gear to auction off! If you have never attended the Stonycreek Rendezvous in Johnstown, PA you need to make the trip and experience it for yourself.
Ask anyone that has been to the Rendezvous and they will tell you that they look forward to this weekend every single year and after the hangover wears off they are ready to do it all over again. As someone that has been attending the event for a majority of her life, I can tell you hands down that Rendezvous weekend is a priority. I love seeing hundreds of people with a common interest gather for a weekend of non-stop boating and partying.
This year the BCC is hosting a Downriver Race, SUP Clinic, SUP race, Freestyle Rodeo, Boater X race and the second annual Canyon race throughout the weekend (for more information on race times and places visit the Benscreek Canoe Club website and Facebook). If you are lucky you will get to witness an air mattress and/or inflatable doll surfing contest…it has been known to happen.
The partying starts Friday afternoon and ends Sunday evening with “Free Beer Sunday” where we clean up the park and try to kick the leftover kegs in the beer trailer. You will encounter everyone from people drinking shots out of a cantaloupe, to random guys crashing your fire to tell you terrible jokes (that three years later we will remember) and a particular campsite creating their own “Harlem Shake” video…Youtube it, you will not be disappointed. I am known to walk around with a pocket full of Jell-o shots the entire weekend.
The Stonycreek River offers a little piece of heaven for everyone; within miles of the festival grounds there is everything from class I-V. You can chose to do a 15 mile mostly flatwater soujorn (if you are typically a whitewater boater, I do not recommend this…you get bored and run out of beer rather quickly), or you can do a 5 mile run through relatively continuous whitewater. No matter what your skill level the Stonycreek has it! Through great efforts of the BCC and local authorities the Stonycreek has turned itself completely around and is no longer filled with acid mine drainage that caused everything you owned to turn orange!
The Benscreek Canoe Club is a group of paddlers from the Alleghenies region of Pennsylvania established in the 1970’s. The club was initially a small gathering of paddlers who met every year for a race down the Benscreek River. Fast forward to today…the club now has over 200 members from all over the country.
Our purpose is simply to promote the enjoyment, challenge, safety and camaraderie of kayaking and canoeing. The club is also quite involved with issues such as stream access, whitewater/conservation dam releases and the remediation of environmental threats. Through the club’s efforts, there are now regularly scheduled white water releases from the Quemahoning dam, as well as Pennsylvania’s first man made white water park in Greenhouse Park on Rt. 403.
So, gather up your boat, paddleboard, air mattress and camping gear and head to Johnstown, PA for a weekend of premier whitewater, good food, great beer and awesome people. You will not be disappointed. Check out the Benscreek Canoe Club website and Facebook for more Rendezvous information. Any questions can be directed here. Hope to see all you Dirt Bags there!
